Looking back on my life, I never really had much of an opinion for education until I became an adult. That’s probably how it goes for most people but my choices regarding education were quite interesting. I was born in Guatemala and when I was about 2, I started school. Valle Verde School is one of the best schools in Guatemala because of its bilingual program. At a very young age, I moved to Rochester, New York for a few years and went to school there. Then, when I came back to Guatemala, it was easy to get accepted back into Valle Verde because I was a former student and because I spoke fluent English due to living abroad. I had no idea how useful this would be living in a foreign country. Because of my age, I learned English as well as Spanish and don’t ever remember struggling with either one of them.
Education is crucial for the development not only of an individual, but also of his or her society. I can see up close what a lack of education can do to an entire nation. Guatemala lacks a good education system and we all suffer the consequences, unfortunately. It’s a broken system that might never get fixed. Politicians like to keep people ignorant so that they can buy people into voting for them, taking full advantage of their ignorance. Poor people don’t know any better and simply vote for the one that gives them the most in one particular moment. Instead of teaching them how to acquire, they’ll buy them off.
I’m lucky. Even though I’m from a third world country, I had all the opportunities I wanted. As a kid, I was always a great student. I didn’t like Math but was quite good at it. I loved writing assignments and reading. Grammar and Spelling also were my favorites. I liked almost everything. Little did I know that would be a bit of a struggle further along the line.
