Michelle Obama grew up in a working class Chicago neighborhood and attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She was an associate attorney at a Chicago law firm and then the vice-president of the University of Chicago medical center. On January 20th, 2009, she became the first African American First Lady.
As the spouse of the U.S. President, one of the most powerful people in the world, Michelle Obama is widely admired and usually the center of attention of the public and media. The reason why she has become the person she is today is not simply that her husband is the President of the United States: Barack Obama. Michelle is a successful career woman, the greatest supporter and defender of her husband, and the caring, protective and nurturing mother of two daughters.
Prior to becoming the first lady, Michelle Obama had her own successful career. She was a former associate dean at the University of Chicago and a member of six boards of directors. She was also the vice-president of the University of Chicago medical center. The U.S. President Obama is himself the biggest fan of his wife and her accomplishment. He even pointed out that, for much of their married life, she had made more money than he did. As he recently stated, "Most people who meet my wife quickly conclude that she is remarkable. They are right about this. She is smart, funny and thoroughly charming." 
Michelle Obama has played a crucial role in and had significant influence on her husband's political career. Michelle's professional relationships were of great importance and assistance when her husband ran for the United States Senate in 2004. In the 2004 race, Barack Obama won the support of influential black business leaders thanks to Michelle's close relationships with them.
