Playwright Jane Martin reveals, in her drama "Beauty," how people only see the ugly side of their lives and the beautiful side of others’. Often, people value the appearance more than what is inside. The main characters, Carla and Bethany, are opposite of one another. Carla is beautiful, but an unsuccessful model and Bethany is a talented writer and accountant but lack beauty. The epiphany is that neither girl appreciates what she has, and both desires what the other has.
In "Beauty," Bethany defines beauty as the “real deal” she explains that having beauty allows a person to be the center of any moment of his or her life. Webster defines beauty as the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. Society has many young ladies believing that beauty is everything. Throughout the play, I learn that a beautiful appearance with dismal brains is of no use. The character Carla knows the disadvantages and problems of being beautiful and tries to explain to Bethany the importance of being careful what she desire. Carla expressed the lack of knowledge when she went to complete a job application; where it says “sign here,” she demonstrated her lack of knowledge and put Sagittarius. It is vital to teach young ladies today that knowledge is power’ and the brain is the container of knowledge.
This story suggest that being discontent in one’s life can make a person unhappy and that leads to being the envy of others.
Throughout the play, the author explains the importance of being happy with ourselves and identifying the good side of our life and what we have, if not we will face a similar situation, like Carla and Bethany.
