Encouraging Good Behavior Through Reinforcement

5 Pages 1191 Words November 2014

Children are not born with bad behaviors; they're taught how to behave and adopt the behaviors from their environment. The teaching and learning process in the classroom can be very effective if teachers are able to encourage existing behaviors’ and teach new ones to their students. This can be done if teachers are able to analyze the behavior of their students. “Applied behavior analysis is defined as the science in which the analysis of behavior are applied systematically to improve socially significant behavior, and in which experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for change in behavior" (William, 1987). This means that through observation, student’s behavior can be analyzed and their weaknesses and strengths can be noted. Then their behavior can be modified to achieve the desirable behavior. To bring about a change in an individual’s behavior, their behavior has to be closely monitored to gage the effectiveness of each strategy. To bring about a change in someone’s behavior, reinforcements has to be used. “Reinforcement can include anything that strengthens or increases a behavior, including stimuli, events and situations.”(Kendra Cherry, (2014). To encourage desired behavior it has to be reinforced by prompting, fading, shaping and chaining.
To begin with, the use of prompts triggers positive behavioral development in children. Prompts are antecedent events that help to initiate a response. They are used to assist a student in doing a task. With the use of prompts the learner is able to understand and give correct response to the tasks or instructions. When first trying to motivate and direct the learner, prompts are used immediately after the instruction. Sometime types of prompts include gestures, verbal, model and physical. Example if the teacher asks a student for a saw he/she might model at the same time. Thus it can be noted that to give the learners a correct direction to the instruction ...
