According to Parritz and Troy (2014), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can be defined as "a sustained pattern of anger, irritability, and defiant or vindictive behavior  (p. 168). It is important to note that oppositional attitudes are considered a normal behavior during development in children age's two to three and in children in the early adolescent phase of development. However, this oppositional behavior may become "frequent and consistent  to the point where it "affects the child's social, family and academic life  (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry [AACAP], 2012).
This paper will discuss the case of Michael and the possibility that he may be exhibiting signs and symptoms of ODD, which without the proper intervention and treatment, may evolve and lead to Conduct Disorder (CD).

The case study examines the life of Michael, a 12 year-old boy in his first year of junior high. He is exhibiting several key behaviors that are important to consider when deciding on a psychological diagnosis. The case study indicates that Michael has been disobeying or resisting school rules and regulations, disrupting class, and becoming violent towards other male students. Additionally, Michael finds his schoolwork challenging because of his reading difficulties. Finally, Michael tends to be a private person only comingling with one or two other male students.
The behaviors of significant concern are his blatant disregard for authority; his class disruptions that are meant to purposefully annoy his teachers and classmates, his violent vindictive attacks of other male students and his solitary nature. Also of concern are his self-declared feelings of loneliness and sadness.
