In Sandra Cisneros’ “Mericans," she recalls a moment in her life when she is held between the old involving her roots and culture and her present world which is centered on the American life customs. The first person point of view gives the reader a connection with the author’s personal experiences as seen through the characterization of young girl Micaela. The author’s main focus in her diction is the comparison of generations and their values, where youthful generations are uninterested in the culture or language of their parents, forgetting their heritage as time goes by. Cisneros’ level of language is adequate throughout the organized story because it is neither childish nor too mature for the audience. “Mericans “takes place outside a church, where Micaela and her younger siblings are waiting outside impatiently for her grandmother to finish her religious practices. Cisneros’ first person point of view contributes to the work’s character selection, writing style, and the organization of the story.
To begin with, character selection adds to Cisneros’ point of view when she introduces Micaela as the protagonist. Micaela represents Cisneros at a younger stage of her life when she is interested in child’s play rather than her heritage, so Micaela’s attitude at the beginning of the story is to comprehend the reasons behind her grandmother’s rituals which seem unimportant to Micaela. The protagonist’s attitude changes throughout the story from being unsatisfied to being compassionate.” [We are] Mericans, [we are] Mericans, and inside the awful grandmother prays” (Cisneros 90) gives the audience the knowledge which the narrator has accepted both customs in her life.
