Employee Structure in a Restaurant

In the world we live in everyone has different ideas about what society is and how it works. Society, by my definition, is a group of people working together towards a common goal, or group of goals. Everyone is part of at least one society, and each society in the world is unique. At my place of employment, a restaurant, we are our own society. We break the mold with all that we do and with all the product we put out to customers. Some may not see this family of employees as a society, but it is. We, all the employees and managers, are working towards the same goals. We all want to make every customer happy, we want to satisfy their hunger, and we want to grow. We all want to grow as people and as a business. We accomplish all of these goals daily. This, by my definition is a well working society. But there is a lot that goes into the operation that makes us a successful little society. In order for a restaurant society to work it needs to have qualified front of house employees, and a creative kitchen staff.
Chef Bob Kinkead once wrote “A great server can overcome mediocre food, but great food never redeems poor service.” This is the truest statement about a restaurants success I have ever seen, and could not put it into better words. This quote is one Chef says at pre-service meeting every day. This means, regardless of what is happening in the kitchen, if we mess up an order here or there, if food takes a little too long to come out, if someone’s burger is overcooked, none of this truly matters. The most important part of having a restaurants society be successful is having qualified well trained front of house staff. Every employee that works in the front of house or has contact with customers’ needs to give 110% everyday, no matter what. Service is what can make or break a restaurant.
