The first time this happened was in 1824 for the John Quincy Adams and the Andrew Jackson election. Jackson received 151,271 popular votes while Adams only received 113,122. Bush and Al Gore. Al Gore won the popular vote by about 540,000 votes but Bush won the electoral vote and won the election becoming the 43rd president ("U. S. Electoral College").
